As a member of the Student Life team, the Director will give leadership to the Athletics and Campus Recreation program at Ambrose University. They will oversee the various Athletics and Recreation programs, all of which are aimed at the holistic growth of students and student athletes in a Christ-centered co-curricular environment. In aligning with the University’s strategic plan and goals, the Director will plan, administer, and evaluate the various activities of the Department and lead and supervise their team personnel towards this end. They will work closely and collaboratively with many other people and departments in the University, most notably the Student Life staff, Enrolment Management, Academic Success, Campus Services, and the Development office.

Duties and Responsibilities

Institution

  • Support Ambrose’s mission that students grow and mature in all aspects of their lives through the provision of services that support holistic growth.
  • Serve as an integral member of the institution’s leadership and be an active member of the Student Life team, helping the campus culture thrive.
  • Collaborate with other departments to advance the objectives and vision of Ambrose University, Student Life, and the Athletics Department.
  • Provide leadership in the implementation of institutional policies and procedures for Athletics initiatives.
  • In accordance with Ambrose’s strategic goals and regulatory requirements, develop, implement, monitor, and review tactical and operational plans, procedures, systems, and supports related to Athletics and Recreation activities.
  • Maintain external relationships and memberships with relevant agencies and organizations.
  • Develop the Athletics and Recreation yearly budget and operate within approval limits.  This budget will be developed in conjunction with the Dean of Student Life.

 

Varsity Athletics

  • Lead the Athletics and Campus Rec Department in integrating Christian faith and providing opportunities for experiencing Christ in the regular rhythms of the department and student experience.
  • Supervise and support all Athletics Administrative staff, ensuring the excellent delivery of Athletic services in each of their portfolios.
  • Supervise and support coaches for the various intercollegiate sports, assist them in handling team issues, orient them to their responsibilities, and train them to the University positions on key issues of intercollegiate athletics.
  • Oversee selection of and supervision of other part-time athletics staff such as Chaplains, Athletic Therapists, or other support personnel.
  • Select, support, and oversee the Student Athlete Leadership Team and train and equip them in their leadership growth and activities.
  • Lead the vision casting, planning, and implementation of new programs and opportunities for growth, such as new sports, summer camp programs, building projects, etc. in alignment with the University Strategic Plan.
  • Represent Ambrose University on the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Council and be involved in ACAC committee work, attend Conference meetings, and comply within its governance and eligibility rules.
  • Participate in sponsorship and fundraising initiatives and build further capacity for revenue generation within the department.
  • Numerous administrative tasks.

Recreation

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate recreational opportunities for the Ambrose community.
  • Supervise campus recreation staff and students and ensure their delivery on recreational opportunities for the whole community that work toward a Christ-centered, healthy, active, and engaged campus life.
  • Monitor the use of resources such as budget, facilities, and equipment and ensure recreational opportunities are available in collaboration with varsity offerings.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred.
  • Degrees in the areas of Sports Administration, Physical Education/Kinesiology/Coaching, Leadership, Student Development, or Business Administration preferred.
  • Athletics, leadership, and administrative experience preferably in an athletic management setting.
  • Coaching experience/certification in at least one sport.

Other

  • Experience with athletic gym equipment, various computer software programs, Live Streaming technology, medical supplies, and fitness center equipment an asset.
  • Has a knowledge of Post-Secondary and Athletics legislation, reporting and regulatory requirements.
  • Able to work evenings and weekends.
