Behavioural Science 405: International Community Development

The BHS program has developed a partnership with the Seed of Hope in Bhekulwandle, South Africa, a community severely impacted by the AIDS crisis and facing poverty and high unemployment.  BHS students explore firsthand the intersection of sociological and community psychology theories and their application in an international setting. While in South Africa, the students use their BHS education to perform community assessments and work with the families served by Seed of Hope.

Seed of Hope provides a range of programs and services focussed on improving the lives of children, community development, and addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis. They accomplish these goals through after school programs, community education, employable skills training, clothing and food donations, spiritual instruction, AIDS education, support & testing, care for the terminally ill and much more.

This partnership allows senior BHS students to travel to South Africa and work with Seed of Hope. Students assist in the administration of a community needs assessment, and work alongside the staff at Seed of Hope. This travel opportunity occurs every two years and can be applied for credit to the Behavioural Science program.
