Behavioural Science 405: International Community Development

During the last two weeks of August this summer, Dr. Kelly Schwartz (Program Head, Behavioural Science) and Dr. Peter Doell will be leading a group of Behavioural Science (BHS) students to South Africa. They will be partnering with Seed of Hope, an organization that cares for those who are disadvantaged and/or affected by AIDS in the Bhekulwandle community. They specialize in providing after school care, community education, spiritual counseling and instruction, AIDS education and testing, care for terminally ill AIDS patients and much more.

This travel opportunity is for senior BHS students to explore firsthand the intersection of sociological and community psychology theories and their application in an international setting. While in South Africa, the students will assist in the administration of a community needs assessment, and work alongside the staff at Seed of Hope. It is our hope that more groups of BHS students will travel to Seed of Hope in the future as we seek to build a long-term relationship with this agency.
