How to Apply for a Canadian Student Loan

How to Apply for a Canadian Student Loan

  • Contact your Provincial or Territorial Student Loan Office to obtain a Student Loan package. You may not be able to apply online because Ambrose University College is a Private University College.
  • Complete the Application and forward it to the address shown in the application.

(Consider applying for student loan funding to qualify for and access the scholarships and bursaries, such as Canadian Millennium Scholarships and Passport to Education from BC or Rutherford Scholarships from Alberta.  (These last two are based on your final marks during High School).

  • Apply EARLY - you are one of about 300,000 students applying for a student loan, so it is not necessarily a fast process.
  • If you haven't had a response from the Student Loan Office in a month - phone them to find out why. Write down the exact wording of what is wrong, and what you need to do to fix it. Then do it. Keep checking every couple of weeks after that and following any instructions they may give you. When your application is approved you will receive a computer printed, multi-copy form. Bring this to the College on Registration Day, or to the Finance Office during the month before classes start if you are close.
  • Someone in the Finance Office will sign your loan form and request that the cost of your semester of classes be sent directly to the school. The rest of the loan can be deposited directly into your bank account. You will need to provide a copy of a voided cheque to have the money go directly to your account.
You will take the signed form to a designated Post Office, along with some identification papers and they will stamp your forms and send them away.   The money should arrive in your bank account in 7-10 business days and the College will receive its' money about 1 week later.
