How does the residence program work?
The residence program is set up to support you in your year at Ambrose. Each divided Pod will have either a male or female Residence Assistant who will give leadership to the floor. They are responsible for assisting the Residence Director in creating and maintaining a living-learning environment in the Residence in which the greatest education, social, cultural and spiritual development may be realized by each student.

How is the Residence set up?
There are three floors of the residence each with two Pods. The Pods have around 8 rooms, each with 2 or 3 people per room. The rooms boarder a common area that has soft seating and a small kitchenette. In the basement there will be a computer lounge, kitchen lounge as well as a TV lounge.

Will we have keys or cards to get into Residence?
The Residence will have proximity cards. The cards will prevent anyone from getting into the residence, or each pod who does not belong! Make sure you don't loose your card!

Is the Residence safe?
There will be 16 survellance cameras on the main campus, as well as 6 residence image capturing cameras. The main entrance and each pod has a proximity key that will only allow a key holder to enter.

What Day can I move into Residence?
Residence move in will be September 11th !

Can I bring a microwave or a mini fridge for my room?
Students can bring their own mini fridges for their rooms, but cannot bring Microwaves. Each Pod will have a small kitchen in the lounge area equipped withcommunity fridges, a microwave, sink and limited cabinets for small snacks such as cereal or popcorn.

Can I bring my own TV?
You can bring your own TV for your room. Students are expected to use their discretion in viewing movies/shows that are appropriate for a Christian environment.

What are the rules?
At the beginning of each semester students are asked to sign off on a Residence Contract outlining the rules and guidelines for Residence. Please refer to the Resident Contract for more details.

Can I have my own phone?
Students are expected to provide their own phone, set up and maintenance.

Do I have to live in residence?
All full time, first year Ambrose students are required to live in residence if they are under 20 and are not a resident of the Calgary area.

How much is Laundry?
There are six sets of new high capacity machines available to the students on a 24 hour basis at the rate of $2.00 per session per machine. The laundry room is monitored by close camption cameras. There are also facilities for ironing clothes.

Is there parking available?
There are 20 resident student parking stalls available to the rear of the residence building. The campus also boasts an additional 220 parking stalls that are available to all students. Parking wil cost approximately $280.00/semester.

What can I expect to be in the room when I arrive?
Residence Rooms will include:

An inventory of the room's furniture is taken at the beginning of the school year, if there is anything missing or damaged at the end of the year, the students account will be charged with the appropriate amount.

Can I live with my Friend?
There is a section on the residence application that asks if you have a friend you would like to live with. Both people need to put each other down for the request to be considered.

Can we make our own food?
In the Pod kitchens there will be community fridges, a microwave, sink and limited cabinets for small nacks such as cereal or popcorn. The meal plan is mandatory for all resident students.

What should I bring when I move in?

Will there be a place to store my bike?
There will be storage racks outside for bikes, locks are not provided.

Do any Calgary Transit buses or trains go to the new campus?
The new campus is located only minutes from a bus terminal. Routes, 2, 53, 67, 144, 301, 401, 435, 438 and 439 all go to this terminal. Please see http://www.calgarytransit.com/ for more details.

How Residence Life Works

Residence Staff

Each divided floor will have either a male or female Residence Assistant who will give leadership to the floor. They are responsible for assisting the Residence Director (RD) in creating and maintaining a living-learning environment in the Residence in which the greatest education, social, cultural and spiritual development may be realized by each student.

Resident Assistants (RA)

Each pod has a Residence Assistant. They are upperclassmen who have taken the year to concentrate not only on academics but also the members of each pod. Their responsibility is to create an environment that will encourage spiritual, academic, and emotional maturity.

Spiritual Life

Weekly prayer meetings/accountability groups are encouraged as part of the Residence program. Residence life offers a unique and valued opportunity for students to grow spiritually. Residence Assistants will be available to meet with individual students for times of prayer, encouragement or just listening ear.

Residence Information Board

The information board will be located either in the main entrance or in the lounge area. All Residence communication and information will be placed there regularly, including all Residence forms.

Pod set up

Each Pod has 12 rooms that frame a common area located in the middle of all the rooms. Each Pod has its own kitchenette complete with 2 fridges, a sink, a cabinet, and microwave.

Pod and Suite Meetings

All students are expected to attend all floor meetings and suite meetings.

Conflict Resolution

Students are expected to be considerate of the other people with whom they share the residence. Students are encouraged to resolve conflicts themselves first and the next step would be contacting your RA and then the Resident Director if the situation does not improve. Matthew 18:15-17 should serve as a guide

Damages

All students within the same suite will share the cost of any damages in the suite unless someone claims responsibility. Cost of any damage to the common areas within the Residence will be charged to the floor, if on a particular floor or to the whole community if in a common area like the lounge, unless someone claims responsibility. Cost of the repair of the damage will include materials, labor and administration.

Emergencies

In the event of a medical emergency, call an ambulance (if necessary) and then inform one of the Residence staff. In the event of another form of emergency (emergency: something that needs immediate attention), inform the Residence staff.

Fire Evacuation

In the event of a fire, or a fire alarm, all students are to leave the residence building immediately, closing doors as they go, and meet at a designated area outside the residence building. Contact the Emergency Services (911) and the Residence Director once everyone is out of the building. It is important that when a student is away this is communicated to the RA and the student's name put on the information sheet with a contact number.

Internet access

The whole residence will have wireless internet access. As well, there will be computers located in the basement with internet access.

Bike Storage

There will be outside bike racks that Students can store their bikes on. A lock is suggested.

Inspections

All suites will be inspected by Student Development staff over the Christmas break and at the end of the spring semester. All students are required to do a thorough cleaning before leaving for the Christmas break. The final spring inspection will determine the damage deposit refund.

Insurance

The Campus does not cover personal property. The Campus is not responsible for the loss of personal property in the Residence or in the parking area due to fire, theft, interruption of utility services, or other causes. Students are encouraged to provide their own personal tenant insurance or come under their parents' insurance policy.

Garbage

There will be a garbage facility for Students to dispose of their garbage outside the residence.

Keys

Each student is given a key at the beginning of the school year. They are responsible to return their key when the Residence closes in April. The unauthorized duplication of Residence keys is not permitted.

Maintenance

Any maintenance issues are to be reported to the Residence Director. A damage report form must be filled out and these forms are available on the Information bulletin board and submitted to the Residence Assistant. Students are responsible for any damage caused to their room/suite and appliances that are not due to normal domestic wear and tear. Only ceiling lights will be replaced by Campus Services.

Moving Out

All students will have completed the move out cleaning checklist and returned their keys to Campus Services before leaving the residence. The last day in residence notice will be posted. If you wish to stay past the official residence last day, continuing residence fees can be discussed with the RD.

Parking

There will be parking available for Residence students. It will be an approximate cost of $260.00 per semester

Cleaning

All students are responsible for keeping their suite clean and livable. Resident Assistants will create a common area cleaning schedule

Cleaning Supplies

Students are to provide their own cleaning supplies.

Computer Room

There is a computer room located in the basement of the Residence, the computers are equipped with basic software and have internet. The internet lounge will be closed at the time of curfew.

Curfew

A Sunday - Thursday curfew is in effect at 12:00am. On Friday and Saturday the curfew will be set at 1:00 am.

Candles

Candles may not be used in the Residence at any time unless given special permission from the RD.

Enforcement of Rules

It is important for all residence students to abide by the guidelines outlined in the Residence Guide, Residence Contract and Student Handbook. If a student chooses to not abide by these rules, the appropriate disciplinary action will be enforced. Students requiring further disciplinary actions will meet with the RD. See the Student Handbook for further details.

Phones

Students are responsible for supplying the connection and maintenance.

Sign-Out

All students must sign out whenever they will be away overnight. This is a safety measure; residence staff must know who is in the building in case of an emergency.

Resident Lounges and common areas

The residence lounges and common areas are located in the basement of resident. There is a TV lounge, a laundry room, a residence kitchen and other rooms for games and activities. There will be a variety of board games available as well as either a foosball table or ping pong table The lounges are closed at curfew with the exception of the laundry room which will stay open all night.

Basement Kitchen

There will be a kitchen downstairs for students to sign out through there RA's. It will have a fridge, stove, oven and a sink. The kitchen lounge will be locked unless signed out and Students will be responsible for cleaning up after they are done.

Laundry

There are coin laundry facilities in the residence basement. It will be $2.00 per load for both the washer and dryers.

Safety/Security

The security camera system located inside the residence that can be used for reference. There will also be evening campus security

Dismissal of a Student

If a student is asked to leave the Residence as a disciplinary measure, the student will forfeit their semester's residence fees.

Noise

Noise in the Residence tends to travel to the suites directly above and below very easily. Students are encouraged to let each other know when a neighbor's noise is disturbing them. In accordance with City Bylaws (quiet between 10pm - 8am) within the neighborhood and therefore Residence, will be enforced. Noises that can be heard outside the suites after 10pm are prohibited.

Pets

Only small fish will be permitted in the suites. Fish tanks maximum of 25 liters.

TV/VCR/DVD/Electronic Games/Internet

TVs/VCRs and DVD are allowed in the suites. Students are expected to use their discretion in viewing movies/shows that are appropriate for a Christian environment

Internet: internet is available through the computers in the student lounge.

Mail

All mail is to be addressed to the campus address

Smoking/Alcohol/Drugs

The Residence is a smoke-free, alcohol-free, and drug-free building. These and any illegal substances are not permitted on the Residence property.

Visitors

Visitors staying overnight in the Residence must have permission from either the Resident Assistant of the floor you wish to stay on or the Resident Director
