news

March 19, 2008 - Ambrose University College is pleased to announce that the Alberta Minister of Advanced Education and Technology has approved Ambrose to offer a four-year Bachelor of Science: Biology Major effective September 2008.

The program is headed by Dr. Carol Gibbons-Kroeker, who has an extensive background in heart research. The program will be housed on the new Ambrose campus, currently under construction in west Calgary.

The Bachelor of Science: Biology Major (BSc) is designed to allow for maximum flexibility in career choice, whether it is in research, medicine, teaching, or another related discipline. Therefore, the BSc: Biology strives to give students a well-rounded and broad-based education in biology. In this way, the program offers valuable (in some cases, necessary) background knowledge for students interested in the fields of nursing, kinesiology, education, or chiropractics. As well, the program provides all the elements considered to be necessary background for application to professional programs, such as medicine and dentistry, optometry, and veterinary medicine at Canadian universities.

Students can choose to follow a path that best suits their career goals by choosing courses in several sub-disciplines of biology - including cell biology, zoology, microbiology, ecology, and physiology with course work in physiology/anatomy, biochemistry, general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, psychology, and math. Students also receive a broad base of Arts and Science courses as well as the opportunity to choose courses from the Christian Studies program.

Dr. Bernie Potvin, Dean of Arts and Science, considers the Ambrose BSc as a great option for students wanting to study biology in a Christian context. "Ambrose integrates faith and learning in all its courses, including biology" says Potvin. "This integration allows the students a unique opportunity to apply their beliefs with respect to the complex ethical issues raised by the biological sciences."

Ambrose is now accepting applications to the Bachelor of Science: Biology Major.
