Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I consider taking Ambrose's BEd degree?

The BEd degree will prepare teachers to teach in public schools, First Nations settings, inclusive and multicultural classrooms as well as in developing countries. Our BEd prepares teachers particularly for those classrooms composed of diverse learners.

Will the BEd degree be recognised in Alberta and other provinces?

The Bachelor of Education (BEd) is a two-year (after degree) program offered through an intensive, sixty credit program intended to be recognized for meeting the requirements for Interim Professional Certification in the Province of Alberta. Similar to other BEd degrees from Alberta's post-secondary educational institutions, graduates will be certified to teach in Alberta and eligible to be certified to teach in other provinces and countries.

What is an after degree program?

An after degree is a full degree program taken after completion of an initial degree.  In the case of Ambrose's BEd, we will consider applicants who have completed a three year (90 credit) recognized degree from an accredited post-secondary institution.

What grade level can I teach with this program?

The BEd program is a two year 60 credit cohort program focusing on elementary (K-6) education in Alberta.

Admission requires a completed bachelors degree (minimum 90 credits) with a strong liberal arts component from a recognized university or university college.

It is recommended that students applying have the following in their undergraduate degrees:

  • 6 credit hours (2 courses) in English

I am currently in a ministry program but would like to apply for the BEd?

All students seeking admission to the BEd program should consult with the Registrar's office for transfer arrangements to an approved bachelor's degree.

Could I transfer into the Ambrose BEd degree?

Due to the nature of the curriculum it is highly recommended that students remain at their current institutions.

How is technology integrated into the BEd program?

Technology integration includes Moodle design of course components, the use of Moodle to provide learning opportunities for students who choose to do their field experiences in rural and First Nations contexts, and the integration of Smart Technology into all on-campus courses and available for student use in designing and demonstrating course work.

Over and above the classroom teaching and field education what else can I get with my degree at Ambrose?

Integral to the educational philosophy of Ambrose is a student's preparation more than academically. The BEd program integrates two key areas above and beyond the classroom:

  1. Informal Mentorship Program
  2. Paid Internship

Is the Informal Mentorship Program part of my formal BEd program?

No. The informal mentorship program, not to be confused with Field Experience, is designed to provide students with exposure to the life of a professional educator. It is outside of course and field experience requirements. The purpose of the mentorship program is for students to recognize diversity within the profession,  develop insight into the moral and ethical nature of being a professional educator, and to recognize modeled excellence and the courage it takes for a professional educator to be an excellent teacher in today's public schools.

Do I complete my internship during my BEd program?

No. A unique aspect to the Ambrose BEd program is our commitment to providing the possibility of a two month, half time paid internship through the Rocky View School Division to graduates with their Interim Professional Certification in hand.

Can I start the BEd in January?

No. There is a Fall intake of students only at this time.

Can I attend part-time?

No. The BEd program is a full-time degree only.

How do I find a practicum?

The Education department at Ambrose will work with each student in setting up all practicum details.
