Deferred Gifts
A deferred gift is one that is designated to the Lord's work during the lifetime of the donor but can't be used by Ambrose University College until the donor has passed away.
In today's world we have numerous gift instruments approved by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) that fit this category.
The CRA deems that just before a person dies they sold all their assets. The result is that whatever may be construed as income must be entered in the deceased's final income tax return.
Many people pay more income tax in the year of their death than they ever have in any other year. RRSPs, RRIFs and pension funds can be transferred to the surviving spouse tax–free, but once both spouses have died the entire amount remaining is added to income. If there are capital gains or recaptured depreciation realized from the deemed disposition these will further increase the taxable income. Complete estate planning should always include tax planning.
Ambrose currently accept the following types of deferred gifts:
- Bequests—gifts designated in a will
- Charitable Gift Annuities
- Life Insurance

Bequests
As one of the most important documents you will ever possess, your Will guarantees that your most important decisions and desires will be honoured. It ensures that the distribution of the property you have accumulated over your lifetime will be a lasting expression of your values, while making sure that the special needs of your family and loved ones are met. One of the deepest expressions of the Christian values you held true during your life is a gift by bequest. After you have provided for your family, you have an opportunity to support Ambrose University College in its work of developing reflective Christian practitioners with the resources He has given you.
By establishing a bequest to Ambrose in your will, you will receive the following benefits:
- Provide for your family and loved ones—a bequest to Ambrose will not hinder your ability to provide for the needs of your loved ones.
- Simplified giving—making a future gift while retaining control over your estate during your lifetime is a simple way to support our ministry.
- Reduced tax burden—as your estate will receive a charitable donation receipt for the full value of the bequest, this will reduce the tax payable by the estate.
- No minimum amount—and a variety of bequest types can be considered.
- Peace of mind—knowing your desire to help provide Christian higher education will be handled as you have instructed.

Charitable Gift Annuities
A charitable gift annuity benefits you and your family by allowing you to receive guaranteed income for life that may be partly or completely tax–free.
Charitable gift annuities can be especially appealing to people aged 70 or over and who are more concerned about financial security than income growth.
This type of donation is a simple contract providing for you to receive a fixed income for life in return for your contribution of cash or securities.
