1. "The working world is constantly changing"
One single occupation no longer takes workers from the beginning to the end of their work lives. So, being adaptable is an important skill to develop to carry you through your professional career. It means getting to know how you have been wired and gifted:
- Identify your employability and transferable skills
- Identify your special skills, talents, values and interests
- Identify your spiritual gifts and passions
- Learn how to build a Servant profile
2. "Learning never ends!"
Many opportunities for learning are available to our students. Just because you may have a diploma or degree, does not necessarily qualify you for the job you want or may be dreaming about. The need to take further education or learn how to make yourself more marketable may be necessary throughout your life, before you can find or be qualified for the job you want!
Internet sites are available for researching specific occupations, opportunities and any special educational requirements:
- Check out the Labour Market - What are the prospects for your interests?
- Research occupations that interest you
- Identify key skills and related occupations in those occupations, where are there gaps?
3. "It is the journey that counts!"
Enjoy the experiences, opportunities and possibilities you have today! Look around and look for the opportunities presented to you to develop your skills and serve others!
- Consider volunteering, get involved and give back to your community
- Try a part-time job or summer job in a new field so you can explore your talents and gifts
- Look at a paid Internship as an option after graduation
- Learn more about informational interviews and job shadowing opportunities.
4. "Follow your Heart's desires"
Many decisions about our vocation or careers are developed by understanding your own dreams, and passions.
- Take lessons to develop a skill or talent you would like to develop
- Network with people who are interested in your same career path
- Try to excel in your favorite subject
5. "Network with those you know"
Network with your friends, family members, professors, neighbors, co-workers, church or community leaders, and employers. They can aid you in exploring career choices and finding volunteer or work opportunities.
- Remember you do not need to be an expert or have decided on a career to talk about it. Listen to the choices the other students are making. Ask about how they have made their decisions.
