Women’s Futsal 2007-2008

The Ambrose Lions women's futsal team's season came to an abrupt halt in a devastating 2-1 double OT loss to the Prairie Pilots in the bronze medal final on Saturday, March 8 in Olds, AB.

The girls trailed 1-0 throughout the majority of the game, but a late goal by Kelly Sagan evened the score and sent the game to extra time.  No goals were scored in the first OT period and ended up losing the game on a penalty kick in the 2nd OT period.  If not for Prairie's all-star goalkeeper, the girls may have ran away with this game.

A day earlier, the girls lost another stunner in the semi-final against the host Olds Broncos.  Leading the game 3-2 with less than than 5 mins left, the Lions looked to seal the victory to send them to the gold medal match for the 5th straight year.  Then the referees made two controversial calls, one that lead to the tying goal and another one, at the buzzer, lead to the game winning goal by Olds.

While it was a disappointing way to go out, the girls should feel proud of the way they competed.  They had a strong team effort, especially from keeper Amber Locke and captain Rianne Hoedeman.  And while the team says good bye to Hoedeman, they are excited about the emergence of forward Kelly Sagan and first year and all-conference forward Casey Boda.  With the return of veterans Mandy Barnett and Amy Kelly the team looks to be strong again next year.
